Source: nonleaguedaily.com

Moore & Co Construction Solicitors North West Counties League club FC United of Manchester have announced that prolific striker Stuart Rudd has agreed to sign a one-year contract to move from new league rivals Skelmersdale United.

Rudd (pictured right), 29, holds the record as Skem’s highest ever goalscorer and netted forty-seven last season.

Rudd caught the eye of legendary Liverpool and Wales striker Ian Rush when he was a trainee with his hometown club Wigan.

Rush told him: "You will never be a great goalscorer, but you will be a scorer of great goals."

FC United manager Karl Marginson believes Rudd will give his side extra momentum as they look for a second successive promotion.

"We scored 111 goals last season and not one of our players got twenty, which is a good thing in many ways," he said.

"But in the last five seasons Stuart has not scored less than thirty-five. He scores different types of goals, like a poor man's Alan Shearer, because he is good in the air, leads the line well, and gets them from two yards and 35 yards."

Defender Tony Hallam (pictured) has also left Skem to join FC United.

Known as a big lad with a big heart, and a brick wall on the pitch, Hallam started his career at Preston North End before moving on to Nationwide Conference National sides Morecambe and then Southport.

Source: jungeWelt

Beim FC United of Manchester stehen wieder die Fans im Mittelpunkt

Altavista translation

Christian Bunke / Damiano Valgolio, Manchester

»Dort habe ich gefunden, was mir zuletzt fehlte.

»United Road, take me home, to the place, where I belong…« So singen in ganz Europa nur die Fans von Manchester United. Aber im Mai? In Berlin? »…to Old Trafford, Man United, take me home, United Road«.

»Don't pay Glazer, don't pay Sky, still sing city's gonna die. There's two Uniteds but the soul is one, as the Busby babes carry on!« Ein FC-United-Lied, das wohlige Schauer über den Rücken jagt.

»FC United: The Red Revolution«.

»Moss Side! Where's your drug gangs gone?« kam dann der Gegengesang.

Republic of Mancunia«.

Article by The Editor

The ridiculously named FC United of Manchester is officially one year old on July 5th. This time last year, discussions were well underway to form the club in the wake of the Glazer take-over. It has been more successful than anybody could have imagined, winning promotion at the first attempt and attracting crowds of over 4,000. While the reaction to FCUM has been mixed amongst fellow United fans, the North West Counties club's aims and ethos are to be lauded.

The club was formed by a steering committee of just a few fans. But the following built quickly, spreading to those not only those sickened by what had happened to Manchester United, but fans disaffected by the commercialisation of top flight football in general. Indeed, in terms of following they are already the 88th biggest club in the land and growing rapidly.

The attraction is simple – everything that the Premiership no longer represents; standing, camaraderie, sport for the sake of sport and certainly not big business. This ethos was reflected in the club's constitution from the start – FCUM is a fan owned democracy that takes no shirt sponsorship and offers reasonable tickets prices.

Yet some United fans are antagonistic towards their newly crated cousin. Anti-FCUM banners have been seen at MUFC matches, with many Reds seeing the side's fans as 'splitters' or 'traitors.' But that attitude misses the point. Even though FCUM is a new club, which this reporter is yet to attend, their supporters still consider themselves to be Manchester United fans who refuse to go to Old Trafford while it is in the hands of the Glazers. It's a sentiment that many Old Trafford regulars fully understand.

Yet, the trend for fan owned democracies is growing rapidly, as a counter-balance to the multi-billion pound contracts in the Premiership. FCUM followed AFC Wimbledon down the path of mass ownership, the South London side's fans having seen their club stolen by greedy businessmen then transplanted to Milton Keynes. Bournemouth, Lincoln, Chesterfield, Exeter, York, Brentford, Telford and Stockport all now apply the same model. Abroad Real Madrid and new European champions Barcelona are democracies too, proving that it's a model that can work at all levels.

Why does it work? Because the fans, who fund the club, have a real say in the running of the club. Yes, there are different levels of commercialisation, with Real Madrid all about the mighty dollar at the other end of the scale from FCUM, but the same principle is at the heart of each club.

Barcelona on the other hand has always refused to take shirt sponsorship, despite doubling their revenues in the four years that Joan Laporta has been president. They may well change that policy but not the club's democratic ethos. Ticket prices at many of these clubs are also extremely reasonable, with television rights effectively subsidising entry to the stadium. Run by the fans, for the fans.

Not that fans can expect to have a say in running Manchester United soon, even if the Glazers' business model fails. It may be a pipe dream, despite the excellent efforts of MUST to generate enough cash to bid for the club one day. If the Glazers fail to pay back the debt by the earmarked dates, the club will be asset striped by the banks, leaving just the Manchester United name and little else. In that scenario, of catastrophic failure, the fans could come to own the club name but none of the bricks, mortar or players.

Meanwhile, FCUM will begin next season in the North West Counties Division One, nine rungs on the football ladder below MUFC. They now have the right to enter the FA Trophy, and with restructuring of the football pyramid ongoing, the club could find themselves in the professional leagues earlier than predicted. Interestingly, entry into the FA Cup will be possible in 2007/8 so a meeting between the two sides might come sooner than anybody expects.

It seems likely that FCUM will continue to grow, while the club's big brother across town is haemorrhaging fans who can no longer afford the sharply rising ticket prices. Indeed, the FCUM phenomenon ought to worry the suits at Old Trafford; they failed to sell all 4,000 new season tickets on offer for next season, ironically around the same number of people who are regularly attending FCUM matches.

It is to be hoped that one day both clubs and fans can be re-United, when Glazer and his cronies have left. Until that day most FC United fans still consider themselves to be a branch of MUFC. Here's to the faithful, temporarily departed.

IT has been a remarkable season for Flixton FC manager Paul Wright.

The man they call "Fester" – due to his likeness to a certain Addams Family character – has worked wonders at the club, leading them to promotion to the North West Counties Division One.

Not only that, but Flixton also won the Division Two Cup, reached the semi-finals of the North West Counties League Cup and the final of the Manchester Premier Cup, beating local rivals Trafford for the first time in 10 years along the way.

To cap it all off Wright deservedly snatched the Division Two manager of the year award from under the nose of his former assistant – FC United of Manchester manager Karl Marginson.

All this despite the fact he was not even supposed to be managing the club this season.

He told SUM Sport: "At the start of the season I didn't even expect this to be fair.

"I only came here three years ago for 10 games to help the club out and at the start of the season they got in Darren Sheridan because I didn't want to do the job anymore.

"But he got back into pro football so I took the manager's job again.

"At the start of the season we only had two weeks to get a side together and we had a slow start.

"But round about November we had a meeting and decided to go for it, to make a push to see if we could get promoted."

In the second half of the season, Flixton embarked on an incredible run of results, going 16 games undefeated throughout the final three months of the season.

Eventually, the Valley Road side finished just eight points behind champions FC United, who had been expected to run away with the division.

And although Wright is happy about the direction Flixton are moving, he is also annoyed about the

He said: "It annoys me that FC United get so much publicity when they haven't actually done that well with the money they have.

"They only won the league by eight points and if there had been another 10 games to go, I don't know if they would have because they were slipping towards the end of the season.

"The problem is that they claim to be about grassroots football but they're paying a chief executive and a secretary big wages and they're getting into merchandising.

"They're bringing in players from higher divisions who are just falling on money, but hopefully we'll be able to challenge them from the start next season."

SALFORD will be United for injured De La Salle rugby player Chris McGuirk at a bank holiday benefit football match.

Fans club FC United of Manchester are set to take on an 'all star' team featuring ex-England international Peter Reid, ex-Manchester United winger Ben Thornley and a host of other Salford celebs at the event at De La Salle's Lancaster Road base on Monday, May 29.

It's all in aid of the appeal set up by De La Salle members to build Chris a specially adapted house so he can return home to Salford from Southport Hospital's spinal injury unit, where he is being treated for the broken neck he suffered playing for De La last December.

So far they have raised around £104,000 and they hope to double the tally to buy a piece of land in Salford and build the house from scratch. FC United's assistant manager and proud Salfordian Phil Power said: "As sports players we can all relate to the situation with Chris and hearing things like this definitely has an effect on you.

"When you go out on the pitch the last thing you think will happen is that you break your neck and it makes it even sadder that he is such a young lad. "It's good to be in a position to help – especially for me being a fellow Salford lad, and it should be a cracking day out too.

"The reaction of the people in Salford has been brilliant and it sums our town up. When something bad happens we all rally round and do our bit. People slag Salford all the time but things like this go to show what a top place it is. I'm very proud FC United are involved and hopefully Chris will benefit from everyone's help."

Radio DJ Mike Sweeney, ex-Bolton player Tony Cawdwell, ex-Manchester city star Gary Buckley, singer Will Mellor and Salford band Hanky Park will also feature at the event which kicks off at 2pm.

Fund raiser John Camilleri said: "FC United have been brilliant in supporting us and it should be a great occasion with many other people doing their bit. It's been amazing how everyone's rallied round and we are now looking at raising £200,000 eventually and if all goes to plan Chris could come home to Salford by the end of the year."

Tickets are £5 for adults and £2 for kids under 18. There is also a black and white ball taking place at the Palace Theatre on Saturday night, where John and Chris' dad Dave will be among De La Salle members who will show off their newly acquired dancing skills after they paid top dollar for lessons which went towards Chris' appeal.

Meanwhile Salford Reds players Andrew Brocklehurst and Ryan Clayton, together with Forever Reds fans group, have donated a signed England shirt to be auctioned and Irlam Hornets have revealed they raised over £2,000 at the game they recently played against local youngsters.

For further details on the campaign call John Camilleri on: 07908 667806.

Source: Prestwich Advertiser, Thursday, May 25. By Tony Howard

THE pre-season friendly between Gigg Lane ground sharers Bury and FC United will be a strange occasion for Darren Lyons.

The FC player-coach will find himself sat in the away dug out at Gigg Lane for the first time having played for both clubs, including two seasons with the Shakers when he got to run out at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

This time Daz will be playing for the reds instead of against them, and he will be hoping 'United' can repeat the result of that game back in January 1993.

The 38-year-old winger said: "I had a good couple of years at Gigg Lane and I was made up to find out FC would be playing home games there as I still know a lot of the backroom staff and people at the club.

"It was nice to see them again.

"The obvious highlight for me was when we played Manchester United in the cup. I thought I was being wound up when I was told we had drawn them but it was a great experience.

"From the moment Fergie and Bryan Robson came in the dressing room right through until 15 minutes into the game my knees were knocking. "But after we settled down I managed to get in behind Denis Irwin a couple of times and my claim to fame is I got him substituted for Clayton Blackmore."

Lyons has enjoyed FC United's success and has become a cult hero among the red army. So much so that they sing a version of Tight Fit's 1981 number one hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight in his honour.

"No one expected it to be this successful and I certainly didn't think I'd be playing in front of crowds of 6,000 at this stage of my career," he said. "Hopefully, we can continue next season and the game against Bury will be a real test of our progress out on the pitch."

The match will take place on Wednesday, July 19, kick-off 7.45pm. Admission will be £7 for adults and £2 for under-18s.

FC United will play De La Salle All Stars in a benefit game at Lancaster Road Salford for injured rugby union player Chris McGuirk on Monday, May 29, kick-off 2pm. Admission is ?5 for adults and ?2 for under-18s. Ex-Manchester United winger Ben Thornley and former England midfielder Peter Reid will line up for the all stars and there will be musical entertainment too.

The reds then play Radcliffe Borough away on Saturday, July 15, AFC Wimbledon at home on Saturday, July 22, Altrincham away on Wednesday, July 26, Sheffield FC on Saturday, July 29, Halifax Town away on Tuesday, August 1, and Abbey Hey away on Wednesday, August 9.

FC are holding trials for next season's reserve and youth teams in south Manchester on Saturday, June 24 (youth) and Sunday, June 25 (reserves). Youth players must be aged 16 to 18 and the reserves' age range is 19 to 23. All players must live in Greater Manchester. The deadline for applications is Friday, June 2. For more details call: 0870 6260295.

United are celebrating the signing of Stuart Rudd from Unibond side Skelmersdale. Rudd, aged 28, banged in 47 goals last season and manager Karl Marginson has high hopes for him. He said: "Stuart scores different types of goals like a poor man's Alan Shearer."
